NJ Learner’s Permit Written & Vision Test

Getting your driver’s license in New Jersey starts with one important step: earning your NJ learner’s permit. At Technical Driving School, we guide teens and first-time drivers through the entire process—from preparing for the written exam to completing the required vision test—so you can begin your driving journey with confidence.

Who Needs a NJ Learner’s Permit?

The learner’s permit is the first stage of the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program in New Jersey.

  • Teens as young as 16 years old are eligible to apply for a special learner’s permit.

  • Adults (17 and older) can apply for an examination permit.
Both require passing the knowledge (written) test and vision test at an MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) agency.

The NJ Written Knowledge Test

The written test is designed to evaluate your knowledge of:

  • NJ traffic laws and safe driving practices

  • Road signs, signals, and pavement markings

  • Defensive driving strategies

  • Rules of the road (speed limits, right-of-way, lane use, etc.)

  • GDL restrictions and license requirements

📘 The test includes 50 multiple-choice questions based on information from the official New Jersey Driver Manual. To pass, you must score at least 80% (40 correct answers).

At Technical Driving School, we help our students prepare with:

  • Study guides and practice tests to reinforce knowledge

  • Classroom instruction that covers important test topics

  • Tips and strategies for reading and answering test questions with confidence

The NJ Vision Test

Before you can receive your learner’s permit, you must also pass a vision test to ensure you can drive safely.

  • The MVC requires 20/50 vision with or without corrective lenses.

  • If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must bring them to the test.

  • Students who fail will be referred to a licensed vision specialist for corrective action.

After Passing the Written & Vision Tests

Once you pass both tests and your permit is issued:

  1. 16-year-olds must complete the 6-Hour Behind the Wheel Training with a licensed driving school before beginning supervised practice.

  2. 17+ drivers can begin supervised practice driving right away.

  3. All students must follow the NJ GDL restrictions, including driving hours, passenger limits, and decal requirements.

  • Test preparation classes and resources
